Methodology

What makes DPG courses different from many other companies?

Simply put it is our commitment to, and passion for, providing the highest quality learning experience possible. Combine this with more than 25 years of instructional design and adult education experience and you have the DPG difference!

It is the position of the DPG Training Division that Protective Security should encompass an “all hazards, risk-based” approach to maintaining the safety & security of clients and assets. All courses are therefore based on the four elements of the “Cycle of Preparedness: Prevention, Protection, Response, Recovery” as elucidated in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security “National Preparedness Guidelines (NPG)” issued in September 2007. Essential job functions of the Protective Security Specialist are correlated to mission areas contained in the NPG Universal Task List. Other organizations and entities, such as the State of New York, have also adopted this methodology for their official training programs. Additionally, extensive and regular review of military, governmental, and non-governmental agencies/organization’s policies, reports, and curricula is made and DPG course content is based on information, procedures, and techniques utilized by major protective security/services providers, such as the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Department of State-Diplomatic Security Service, and U.S. Army Military Police Protective Services Details.

The Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) instructional systems design (ISD) model is utilized as the DPG course development strategy in accord with the U.S Department of Homeland Security (FEMA) Grants & Training (G&T) “best practices and models” blended learning approach. Reference-based lesson guides are created and routinely updated for each course of instruction. These guides provide consistent and documented delivery of course content. This content is delivered utilizing multi-modal technologies to address Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic learners. Various instructional strategies, such as lecture, problem-based learning, large group discussion, interactive question and answer exchanges between the learner and his/her peers and/or the instructor, multimedia presentations, demonstrations, practice sessions and scenario-based applications of skills are utilized to accomplish course objectives.

An essential component of any learning experience is the measurement of change which occurred in the learner as a result of his or her participation. This change is measured and documented through objective, measurable and standardized evaluation instruments (e.g. written exams, practical evolutions, etc.) which assess the abilities of the learner against the stated affective, cognitive and psychomotor domain enabling objectives and performance measures. Upon successful attainment of the established passing criterion for each domain area, the learner is then certified as competent (at the time of evaluation) in the subject matter presented and evaluated. This process and the resulting issuance of a certification is no different than a certificate (certification) of competency being issued upon the completion of a course in First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), ServSafe® (food handling) and innumerable other programs which provide proof to the public (and to employers) of the certificate holder’s ability to perform essential job functions.
